We source our ingredients from countries where we can make a difference to society and nature. Working closely with not-for-profit organisations and the manufacturer of our exquisite oils enables us to ensure a sustainable supply of the unique bioactive ingredients desired by our research team. In return, we invest in the communities that collect and harvest for us in remote areas. Wider benefits are being seen in the increasing biodiversity of these regions; trees previously being cut down are now seen as valuable commodities and are being protected.
Organic & Natural Certifications
Brands can choose to be certified by independent bodies such as Ecocert, USDA or the Soil Association, which do a brilliant job of supporting organic skincare. The term ‘organic’ refers to the growing and processing method of the natural ingredients used, not the whole product. The term organic can only ever be applied to ingredients within products that are ‘grown’ and ‘processed’ according to ‘organic’ guidelines, which means that many natural products such as clays, salts, minerals or even water that have many benefits can never claim to be organic. For example, bamboo is often not organic. While it may be grown organically, the process to treat it isn’t. Bamboo requires a lot of chemical ingredients to soften it before it is sold in-store or online.
Why did Naya Skincare choose not to gain organic certification?
Largely because we made the decision from the beginning to support communities who supply us with unique bioactive ingredients from around the world. Often these are wildly harvested and/or these communities can’t always afford to get their land certified or accredited by independent bodies due to the costs involved. Additionally, our bioactive botanicals are only now growing in popularity as their benefits are being discovered. Their relative obscurity means they are currently only available through our community sourcing network of small-scale farmers. Organic certification would, therefore, restrict our sourcing abilities, the choice of ingredients we want to work with and who we buy from.
Instead, we use ‘Bioactive’ ingredients throughout Naya’s range; substances that have therapeutic effects on living tissues. Organic ingredients are great. They are safer for us and better for our environment. However, it’s important to clarify that just because something is organic, does not mean it is bioactive. Bioactivity refers to a proven therapeutic benefit of the ingredient. Organic refers to how the ingredient is grown and processed. Both are important, but bioactivity is paramount. Choosing only organically certified ingredients means we would miss out on rich, magical ingredients with incredible skin benefits. We don’t want to compromise on that nor the positive impact we are having on communities around the world.
We Never Test on Animals
We are in the process of becoming a Cruelty-Free International certified company supporting the end to animal testing in cosmetics. The Leaping Bunny mark will be placed on our labels and outer boxes, offering peace of mind for all of our customers. This stipulates that no animal testing is conducted or commissioned for finished cosmetic products or ingredients by the company, its laboratories or its suppliers after a fixed cut-off date. This accreditation required total transparency by the Naya Team, enabling Cruelty-Free International to independently audit us throughout our supply chains, ensuring that we adhere to its animal testing policy and the Standard’s strict criteria.
