Here’s our pick for The Skincare Resolutions to make in 2021 that you can set yourself for the year ahead that come with a high chance of you actually sticking to them. If you do, we can more or less promise your 2021 will be your best skin year yet to come.
No 1 Out with the Old – if expired
As with a new beginning, this is the first thing that comes to find. And having gone through this myself recently: Clearing the bathroom cabinet. There is no reason to be proud of having a filled bathroom cabinet with skincare. All these #topshelfies by influencers where the products already fall towards you.
So how to go about clearing out the space?
We are not saying, throw out everything. That would be simply creating waste. There are some items that may simply not survive the bathroom cabinet clear out. . For example, cleanse your cabinet from any skin care products that are so old you cannot remember when you bought them. You might want to consider recycling those. Beauty products, unfortunately, don’t last forever. In particular the natural ones. Most should have a printed expiration date on the bottle if they last less than two years or a ‘Period After Opening’ (PAO) date on them, which might be something like ‘6M’, meaning 6 months after opening to use up the product. If you can’t find the expiration date, as a general rule, if it’s changed colour, changed smell, or indeed changed the texture – or you are simply not sure – it’s time for it to go. The general rule of thumb, use up what you open as soon as possible. In particular very potent products with actives loss their effectiveness when you open them. It is simple the way of life. We all grow old and hit our expiration date at one point.
In the spirit of overhauling your skincare, have a look at the products still in date – they could contain ingredients you ideally want to avoid this year. Head over to our Ingredient Promise page, to learn more what our committment to you is.
No 2 Protect and nourish your skin barrier
The effects of a compromised skin barrier is real. Think dry, patchy, flakey skin. Increased irritation and sensitivity, not to mention breakouts. If you’re getting sudden flare-ups seemingly out of nowhere, it might be a sign that you’ve overdone it and damaged your skin barrier. This can be caused by using too many actives in your routine that your skin isn’t used too or using harsh products that strip the skin. Or the skin products you are using have many irritating ingredients. Unfortunately, it is not straight-forward to pin down the issue. As we are complex beings. To avoid damaging your skin barrier, when incorporating a new active into your routine, we always recommend building it up first, to see whether your skin can tolerate it and to check that it gets on with your other products.
No 3 Take your make-up off and avoid makeup wipes
Let this be the last year that we say this, but seriously, wash your face and throw away your makeup wipes and never buy them again. So make this Skincare Resolutions one of your priorities. And you can thank us later. Honestly, you won’t regret it. Make your life easier and get yourself a good oil cleanser and makeup remover like Everyday Cleansing Oil. Unlike makeup wipes, it actually removes makeup whilst cleaning and nourishing the skin. Feeling lazy? No problem. Although we’d prefer you washed your face for a good 60 seconds, Everyday Cleansing Oil removes it all in about 10.
No 4 Apply your skincare products correctly
We are sorry – but there is a right way and a wrong away applying skincare. More people than you think actually apply their skincare wrong. A lot of us are guilty of dabbing the products onto our skin, or quickly rubbing them across our face or simply starting with the wrong product first. You deserve more love than that. Your skin does! Your skin is your protective shield – it protects you 365 days in a year over an average of 80 years we each live from sun, pollution, scratches, other external environmental aggressors. It is what keeps you going and what keeps you healthy from any non-inviting guest to make an appearance in your system.
Thus instead of dabbing, every time you apply a product to your face gently massage it into your skin in an upward circular motion. Think of it as a little facial massage to yourself. Not only will this technique help boost your circulation and the absorption of the product, but it can also act as a relaxing mini facial to start and end the day. Plus apply your products the right order.
No 5 Stay Hydrated and fuel your skin from inside out
Here’s one of the most well-known healthy skin care habits –– drink more water. As much as we love coffee, even we’ve got to admit that water is the way forward for flawless skin. You should be drinking at least two litres of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. If you are not a fan of drinking plain water, why not try coconut water, fruit-infused water or herbal teas. More flavour, more hydration. Finally, it is an old saying but it stands true: you are what you eat. As your biggest organ, in many ways, your skin acts like a massive mirror reflecting the state of your health. By staying active and eating a balanced, healthy diet, you will help your body look and feel its best. 2020 has been one hell of a year and it needs to recover from it. Mentally and physcially. And this will give your skin the best chance to show off how amazing you are to the world by feeding it lots of nutrients and keeping your body working at its optimum level.
No 6 Wear SPF, every day. Even in winter.
UV damage is caused by light, not by heat. In FACT, UVA rays can even penetrate windows, so to protect your skin, apply an SPF as the last step in your routine every single day.
No 7 Don’t neglect your neck and chest
As the old saying goes, skincare is from your nipples up. The skin on your décolletage is thin and more prone to ageing than the rest of your body, so every time you put on your fave moisturiser or serum, give some laugh to your chest and neck too, working the product up towards the face so as not to drag the skin down.
No 8 Incorporate facial massage into your routine
One of the best, free skincare tricks you can do is to give your face a little massage when you do your skincare routine, either with a gua sha, a jade roller, a dry facial brush or even your trusty fingers. Not only does it give you the chance to seriously unwind, but it helps with lymphatic drainage, tones the skin and increases blood circulation. You know when you get that post-exercise glow and your skin looks really great? Well, that’s not just the sweat. Increased blood circulation helps nourish skin cells and flush away cellular debris and free radicals, so your skin looks radiant, bright and plump. Use any of our Facial Oils to maximise your facial massage and give your skin much needed slip – facial massage works best when skin isn’t completely dry.
No 9 Be a more conscious consumer
Annually, more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced by the beauty industry, with much more of that ending up in landfill. And whilst we’ve seen a real shift in industry practices in the past few years, with many brands pledging to be more sustainable, ourselves included, we still have a long way to go. As a consumer, you guys have more power than you know, so keep putting pressure on brands and companies to change their ways. Trust us, we REALLY listen to what you have to say. At NAYA, we work hard to create beauty that transforms your skin, NOT your planet and we’re on a crusade against carbon. You can read more about it here.

No 10 Exfoliate, but be gentle
Exfoliates go deep into the skin, and loosening the glue that holds dead skin cells together. So if your skin is feeling textured, dull and even dry, using an exfoliating can help slough away dead skin cells and bring, bright new ones to the surface, leaving your skin smooth and super glowy. Go easy though. Too harsh products can be impacting your skin barrier. Thus we are using gentle ingredients to provide a gentle way of exfoliation. No need to overdo it. Why don’t you try our new Vegan Dry Facial Brush to gentle exfoliate your skin.
No 11 Get your beauty sleep
Skincare resolution No1! (We kept the best bit to last) This is the one. But seriously, beauty sleep is a real thing. Just like our bodies, our skin cells also follow a 24 hour biological clock known as the circadian rhythm, and in this time our collagen is naturally restored and skin cell turnover is stimulated which is essential for plump, radiant skin. A lack of sleep directly affects our collagen production and try as we might, we can’t always guarantee a restful night sleep so it’s a good idea to pack your night time skincare routine with products and ingredients that do the work whether you’re in deep slumber or tossing and turning. Renew Cacay Oil + A was designed to take advantage of your sleep cycle and does all the work whilst you sleep. The same as well our Hydration Mask which can be used as an Overnight Hydration Mask. It actively, but gently, helps to boost collagen, smooth and firm skin, noticeably reducing the appearance of fine lines and giving your complexion some oomph when you wake up. As we sleep, our skin becomes more permeable which means our skincare can penetrate more deeply. Layering your oils and moisturisers also helps to prevent trans epidermal water loss which increases whilst we sleep.
No 12 Put Aside more time for self-care

No 12 Create a Vegan Skin care routine
Go Vegan! From day 1, we decided to launch a vegan skincare routine. There is no need to have animal-derived ingredients in our products or make animals suffer for our beauty. Hence it was very clear for us from our inception that we will offer a vegan skincare routine. But not only that but organic vegan skincare products. Why vegan skin are ? And why organic? Because we wanted to offer you the best vegan skincare products that we could create. Thus 90% of the ingredients we are using in our formulations are organic and thus you enjoying the very best of two worlds by combining organic with vegan. Therefore, with all the old products removed (and recycled where possible), you’ll need to do a bit of a restock. But pause and think first! To guarantee that you won’t be filling up your beauty bag with more products that use chemicals and plastic.
With more people than ever making small changes to live more sustainably, the interest in organic, vegan skincare is growing. And with good reason. And remember, you don’t have to be a vegan to opt for vegan skincare. Sometimes it’s just nice to know that you aren’t rubbing beetle juice, shark fin, cockscomb or fish scales on your face! Wouldn’t you agree?
